MyFAQ

If you asked me early 2020 if data, business, and tech would be my passion, I would have denied it. Turns out: after spending much of the pandemic reflecting on that question, I ended up pivoting from computer science to analytics—learning everything I could about data analytics, machine learning, and industries in need of such skills.

Now, I look forward to starting my career as a Business Intelligence (BI) Engineer @ Actabl—a company seeking to give hoteliers actionable insights to improve operations.

Why did you make this website?
I created and deployed this website using GitHub Pages so I could learn more about web app design, back-end development, and site hosting.

In the future I will use this website as a nesting ground for new SQL projects and ML tips-and-tricks. Though I don't expect it to be anything more than a portfolio site, I strongly suspect such skills will be crucial to understanding business problems from a data perspective.

How long have you been practicing SQL?

I discovered SQL at the end of 2022 (ironically) right before taking a course in SQL and Python while at Emory University. Since then, I have immersed myself in data-driven communities on Medium and gained some SQL tips from professionals like Alex Wang on LinkedIn.

I have experience using SQL for tasks ranging from data mining, business intelligence, and backend developement. I have used SQL to assist in customer data management, classification problems, and churn analytics.

Fun fact: my favorite SQL command is the WHERE statement since it doesn't (technically) exist in regular programming languages like Python.

Do you have any experience working with databases?

I have hosted and deployed my own MySQL database for the YouTube project I talk about in this website. I have experience working with Microsoft SQL Server and current learning Oracle Database here.

By preventing the need for a dedicated server, using GitHub Pages has proven useful for this website's use case. Using GitHub's Actions feature, I have been able to develop and deploy my own sudo-back end production environment.

Why are you interested in SQL / Data Mining?

I think the two combined together accomplish more than what we think: SQL to organize the data; Data Mining to analyze the data. As an entrepreneur and life-long nature by design, this always got me researching the relationship further.

Although both tools are considered buzz words, utilizing these together in industries like Financial services and Internet accountability is still in the works. A very wise data scientist once said this: "This field is the wildwest, and I want to work with the pioneers and innovators that create new and amazing things." Only thing I'd add is to maintain those amazing things for years to come!

What kind of work do you see yourself doing?

I am interested in building, optimizing, and automating versatile databases that communicate with existing enterprise systems.

Alongside this pursuit, I look forward to further learning more about the role of tools like Redis, InfluxDB, and Ansible in areas like data science, machine learning engineering, and devops (you could say I miss some aspects of Computer Science). At the end of the day, a database scientist with the skills to find the right solution for the right business problem.
